Our day began with a prayer in the chapel, and it rejuvenated us. Gibi ma'am took the first class, and it was an introductory session on psychology and its different types. She said, "Do it now," which was extremely motivating and made me remember the following quote:
"If not us, then who, and if not now, when?"
Congressman John Lewis
She asked us to keep a book for noting down points to enhance our knowledge, which could be quotes, paper cuttings, etc. As a social engineer, a teacher should enhance their knowledge and should be well aware of almost everything.
Some of the key points from her session:
"Values are caught rather than taught".
Value-based education is an attenuating factor that lays emphasis on the personality development of individuals. One such value is empathy, which each person requires in this sympathetic world. Through a game, she pointed out the need to think before you speak. After her session, Maya ma’am gave a clear and meaningful conclusion.
The following session was on Gender Equality- Is it a vitality? led by Jijitha chechi. Gender Equality literally means providing equal oppurtunities to each and every individual irrespective of gender.
The question put forth by her, "what will you do as a class teacher if you have a transgender student in your class to maintain gender equality?" made us think for a while. It was a question which I had never thought of or faced before, and now I have a solution (which may or may not be practicable). If such situation occurs, the first thing I would do is to treat them equally and make them participate in every program. So, hopefully, my students will treat them equally, and I will try to convince their parents first. Faced with this question, I recognised that we need to be conscious of social issues and create a solution that we can use accordingly. After this session , we prepared a poster through our teamwork and efforts.
Maya ma’am explained the emblem, motto, and vision of our college. She included many relevant quotes and taught the difference between the syllabus and the curriculum. In this ICT world, a teacher has a multifaceted role.
The last session of the day was optional and was led by Shiney ma’am. After that, we practised for our talent hunt program, and that's the end of this day, but the memory persists...
